CGI.br promotes IGF 2015 in Brazil at UN event

Members of CGI.br are in Geneva for the WSIS Forum event

The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) is participating in discussions on the revision of the World Summit on the WSIS Forum 2015.

The presentation session of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) at the 2015 WSIS Forum was attended by the counselors Carlos Afonso and Thiago Tavares, the representative of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MRE – Ministério das Relações Exteriores), Jandyr dos Santos Junior and the Director of the Department of Scientific and Technological Themes of the MRE, Ambassador Benedicto Fonseca Filho (co-chairman of the IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group - MAG). Executive Secretary Hartmut Glaser participated remotely. Also participating in the presentation were Marilyn Cade, a representative of the business sector, Constance Bommelaer, from the Internet Society, and Ambassador Jānis Kārkliņš, chairman of the MAG.

During the session, Carlos Afonso discussed logistical aspects and preparations for holding the 10th edition of the IGF, to be held November 10-13 in João Pessoa (PB). Afonso stressed the need to engage young people in the realization of the IGF. “One of the big impacts to push for the upcoming Global IGF in Joao Pessoa is to increase the youth participation. This participation must be done in a qualified way,” he said. “The CGI.br has appointed 3 Board Members to identify opportunities and explore possibilities to enhance the participation of Youths from all over the world on the next IGF,” he added. Three areas of activity will be emphasized: Principles and models for Internet governance, privacy and security, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

To date, Brazil will be the only country to host the IGF twice, having hosted it for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 2007. With the completion of the IGF 2015, the United Nations will decide whether the series of events will continue or not.
